SoftBank Group and OpenAI have announced a joint venture named SB OpenAI Japan, aiming to provide advanced artificial intelligence (AI) services to Japanese businesses, with plans for future global expansion. This 50-50 partnership will leverage OpenAI’s cutting-edge technology and SoftBank’s extensive market presence to enhance AI adoption across various industries in Japan. 

Key Details:

Resource Allocation: SoftBank plans to assign 1,000 employees in 2025 to support sales and engineering efforts for the venture. The initiative will begin by integrating OpenAI’s technology within SoftBank’s group businesses, such as Arm Holdings and PayPay, aiming to automate workflows and boost productivity. 

Financial Commitment: An annual investment of $3 billion is allocated to facilitate the development and deployment of AI services within SoftBank’s subsidiaries. This substantial investment underscores SoftBank’s commitment to advancing AI capabilities and establishing a model for global adoption. 

Strategic Goals: The joint venture aims to establish a model for global adoption, leveraging corporate financial resources and data for rapid development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son emphasized that AGI could be realized sooner within large corporations due to their ample resources and data.

This collaboration is part of a larger strategy to accelerate the development of AGI by combining corporate financial resources and extensive data access. Recently, SoftBank and OpenAI announced a plan to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the United States, indicating a strong commitment to advancing AI capabilities.
